MMA makes groundbreaking move in Melbourne, Australia

by Andreas Georgiou - @AGeorgiouMMA

After years of teasing potential "super" events in Melbourne, Australia, which included a possible visit to the 50,000 capacity Etihad Stadium, it seems that mixed martial arts has finally made a break through in the merry old land of Oz after the latest state election results.

The hurdle that stood in way of the UFC invading Melbourne was the state government of Victoria;
which prevented MMA contests from taking place in octagons, pentagons, decagons, any sort of caged battle zone.

Victoria’s Labor Party promised to overturn the ban against caged fighting environments should they get into power, as the Labour Party's Daniel Andrews was successfully elected this week.

The "Click for Vic" social media campaign was launched by UFC officials in 2013, with the premise of educating a change in the policy.

UFC Director of Operations for Australia, New Zealand and Canada Tom Wright stated in 2013 (via MMA Junkie): “This year alone, the UFC will hold more than 30 events around the world and close to 400 individual competitions, all held in a safe, fenced-in enclosure.

“Our first priority is the safety of our athletes and what we won’t do – and never will – is hold an event in a boxing ring.”

It has been rumoured the promotion are targeting a Nov. 15 date at Etihad Stadium, with a title fight expected to serve in the main event per MMA Junkie.
