The Stats Behind The UFC's British and Irish Invasion in 2014

by Ben Heather @benheather

So far this year British and Irish fighters have had a total of 30 fights inside the Octagon. With the two most recent happening this weekend at UFC Fight Night 48. This weekend we saw both Danny Mitchell and Michael Bisping back in action. So after watching them fight I thought it would be interesting to review just how the Brits and Irish have got on so far this year.

If we split the British and Irish fighters out, I will discuss both separately but for now I will start with the Brits.

British UFC Fighters in 2014

In 2014 fighters from England and Scotland have fought 23 times in the Octagon with a combined record of 7-15-0-1 that's a win percentage of 30%. When you then realise that Robert Whiteford the only Scot to have fought so far this year has had one fight which he won it means that English fighters have only managed 6 wins from 22 fights.

If it wasn't for Phil Harris' loss in London being changed to a no contest it would be 6-16 for the year for the English fighters.

The six wins picked up by English fighters have all come from guys who have also lost a fight this year. That being said though it does include Ross Pearson's loss to Diego Sanchez which everyone knows should be a win. If that was rightly called a win then Pearson would be the most successful English fighter in 2014. However, as it goes in the records as a loss it means that Ross Pearson, Tom Watson, Luke Barnatt, Vaughan Lee, Brad Pickett and most recently Michael Bisping have all gone 1-1 so far this year.

The British fighters with the worst record this year are Andy Ogle and Danny Mitchell who have both gone 0-2 but like I said before Phil Harris would have been part of the 0-2 club this year if it was not for Louis Gaudinot failing a drugs test which ruled his first loss of the year a no contest. Ian Entwistle, Brad Scott, Jimi Manuwa and John Hathaway have also all gone 0-1 this year.

Noteable Streaks

Between Jimi Manuwa losing in the main event of UFC London to Alexander Gustafsson on 8th March and Tom Watson winning on 16th August English fighters went on a 0-9 run.

The best run for the Brits has been a 2 fight win streak, which has happened twice, the first during the UFC London event with wins for Luke Barnatt and Brad Pickett. The second occasion happened last weekend at UFC Fight Night 47 with wins for Tom Watson and Ross Pearson.

Thanks to Michael Bisping's dominant victory in China the Brits are currently 1-0 and hopefully the rest of the fighters can pick up where Bisping left off in Macau.

Regional Performance

After realising that the English fighters have not had the best of years so far I thought I would look in to where they have performed better than others. What I then found out shocked me, as you will see below.

Normally you would expect fighters to perform better on home soil or close to home however, surprisingly the fighters who fought in Europe only managed a combined record of 2-8-0-1 that's a win percentage of only 18% with the English guys going 0-5 in the last two European cards in Germany and most recently Ireland.

The region where British fighters have performed best is Asia, where the Brits have a 50% win percentage with Vaughan Lee and Michael Biping picking up wins while John Hathaway and Danny Mitchell both lost.

Irish UFC Fighters in 2014

Now when you look at the Irish fighters and I will include Northern Ireland in this as well its a completely different ball game. This year Irish fighters have competed in seven fights and have an overall record of 5-1-1.

The only loss in that time was Neil Seery, who stepped in as a last minute replacement against Brad Pickett in London. However, for fighters who have had a full camp the only blemish on the record is Norman Parke picking up a dubious point deduction in Brazil which resulted in a draw.

Norman Parke and Neil Seery have fought twice in 2014 with Parke going 1-0-1 and Seery 1-1. Conor McGregor, Cathal Pendred and Paddy Holohan have remained unbeaten after one fight each in the Octagon this year.

Noteable Streaks

As you are all aware I am sure, Irish fighters went 5-0 at UFC Dublin and since then we haven't seen another Irish fighter in action. The Irish fans will certainly be hoping Conor McGregor can make it 6-0 when he faces Dustin Poirier at UFC 178 next month.

Regional Performance

All of the Irish fights bar one have taken place in Europe with the Irish going 5-1, the only exception was the Norman Parke fight in Brazil which ended in a draw.
