UFC FIGHT NIGHT 63: Mendes v Lamas Review

Fairfax, Virginia hosted this weekends UFC festivities with two former title challengers in the main event. So, without further ado, let's take a look at the fights...

Dustin Poirier v Diego Ferreira

Poirier got back to winning ways with a stoppage of Diego Ferreira early on. Both men came out throwing bombs, with Poirier clipping Ferreira and knocking him down early. Poirier stayed upright, letting his opponent get back to his feet. After a series of more shots from the 'Diamond', eventually Ferreira fell again to a right uppercut, allowing Poirier to swarm with the ref jumping in for the stoppage.

Result: Poirier by TKO round 1

Clay Guida v Robbie Peralta

This was all about the wrestling of Guida. Time after time he took him down and almost glued himself to Peralta. Granted, Peralta didn't let him advance position or latch onto a submission attempt (apart from a nasty looking arm-triangle choke late on), but he never really had any time to find a rhythm for himself.

Result: Guida by Unanimous Decision

Julianna Pena v Milana Dudieva

This was 18 months of frustration, rage and anger released by Julianna Pena here. Pena started with wild strikes, defending a first takedown but succumbed to the second. It didn't matter, as Pena just unleashed seven shades of fury onto Dudieva, with the ref stepping in mercifully.

Result: Pena by TKO Round 1

Michael Chiesa v Mitchell Clarke

For the majority of the first two rounds, Chiesa used trips and throws to get Clarke to the mat, then lock in a tight body triangle and take the back. This allowed Chiesa to chip away at his opponent via strikes and submission attempts, with Clarke defenceless. In the third round though, Clarke baited Chiesa into a standup fight. Both men slugged it out for the last round, eating numerous crunching blows, but it wasn't going to be enough for Clarke unless he finished the fight.

Result: Chiesa by Unanimous Decision

Al Iaquinta v Jorge Masvidal

Well, this was controversial. Round One consisted of both delivering heavy strikes to each other, Iaquinta noticeably the legs, until Masvidal hit a flurry of punches that knocked his opponent down. The follow up shots badly cut Iaquinta under his right eye. Into the next, and Al looked to diversify his striking to good effect. But those legkicks were starting to take real power out of 'Gamebred's strikes. The final frame became a back and forth affair with both peppering each other with strikes, and by the end Masvidal's legs were purple with welts. When the judges announced Iaquinta got the split decision, the crowd voiced their displeasure and then Al went on a 'WWE' style promo about the crowd. Bizzare.

Result: Iaquinta by Split Decision

Chad Mendes v Ricardo Lamas

Mendes again proved tonight why he is one of the top fighters in his division with a quick and impressive victory over another former title challenger. 'Money' started fast, not missing a step. Lamas hit him with a couple of shots early on but Mendes walked through them, knocking Lamas down with a right. Mendes stayed patient and stalked him, eventually clipping him with a left hook, and Lamas fell to the floor. Then Mendes just could reign strikes down on Lamas, from various positions until the ref stopped the fight.

Result: Mendes by TKO Round 1
