A welterweight battle between European standouts John Hathaway (17-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) and Gunnar Nelson (13-1-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) has been added to UFC 189. UFC Officials confirmed the bout earlier today.
UFC 189 takes place July 11 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, where UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo will defend his title for the 8th time, taking on Irish superstar Conor McGregor in the main event. Welterweight titleholder Robbie Lawler takes on Rory MacDonald in the co-main event.
Returning to action following a year long lay off, Brighton's John Hathaway looks to bounce back following a stunning, knockout of the year loss to Dong Hyun Kim at The Ultimate Fighter China Finale. At just 27 years old, Hathaway made his UFC debut in 2009 and quickly made a name for himself as one of the best British fighters in the UFC on route to putting together a 7-2 record. Hathaway's career has been somewhat on hold however in recent years as a battle with Crohn's disease seen Hathaway fight once since 2012. Hathaway holds notable wins over Diego Sanchez and Rick Story.
26-year-old submission specialist Gunnar Nelson fights for the first time since the first professional loss of his career, a decision loss to Rick Story at UFC Fight Night: Nelson vs. Story In October. A training partner of Conor McGregor's, the Icelander snapped a 13 fight winning streak with the loss to Story. Prior to the fight, Nelson was 4-0 in the UFC with 2 performance bonuses and widely tipped as a future title contender. A black belt under Renzo Gracie, Nelson has 9 wins by submission an 3 wins by TKO
