AS Scotland's Firstfighting Championship (FFC) nears its next show, there's one professional eager to make his long awaited return.
The Scottish Hit Squad's Kev Devine finally steps back in the cage after over two years out of action. Devine will clash with Englishman Lee Richardson at FFC: Full Force at Motherwell's Alona Hotel on February 20.
Speaking to Kingdom MMA ahead of his return, Devine explained his prolonged absence. He said: “My first, and only, pro MMA fight was at FFC1 in November 2012. A number of things have stopped me fighting again. In 2013 I had two fights cancelled on the day of the fight after I'd weighed in and in 2014 I got married to my beautiful wife and couldn't get matched at a suitable time around that, so it's been about two and a half years since I've fought and the game has changed but the players are the same.”
With Devine's return to action comes a move from featherweight to lightweight.
Devine said: “That decision was made on account of getting fat; I wouldn't have been able to make featherweight comfortably. But personally I feel a lot stronger and fitter at this weight and with training with a lot of bigger folk I feel comfortable competing at it.
“In the time between fights I don't think my style will be much different but I feel much more experienced and skilled than I would have been had I had my second fight in 2013.”
Now Devine can focus on finally getting back amongst the action on February 20. Speaking of his opponent, Richardson, Devine said: “I know he's got a good record and has never been out the second round which is what excites me about the fight. I've watched a few videos of him on Youtube so have a feel for how he might fight but really I'm no good with plans. What I am good with is kicking ass and ripping throats.
Devine's team, the Scottish Hit Squad will take home advantage in to the bumper fight night. Being the closest team to the Alona Hotel they look set to take a massive support to cheer on a batch of up and coming amateurs as well as its pro MMA team.
Devine said: “The atmosphere is always great at the Hit Squad as it's filled with heroes with over 100 years of combined combat experience and a whole lot of brotherhood.
“I Think we have a good chance of going undefeated again this show just like the last FFC. Since the gym went full time we have only had a handful of losses and professionally are 9-0 with every fight being finished in the first round so there's added incentive for everyone to continue that.
“There are no bad fighters in the gym, but I would name one to watch as Andrew Szlyk. He hasn't fought yet but will probably really hurt some poor fellow when he gets the chance.”
Devine take on Lee Richardson at FFC: Full Force on Friday February 20.
