5 Fights to watch in December

by Ben Heather @benheather

Recently it seems a lot of people are already looking ahead to 2015 as the schedule which has been announced includes some massive fights however, that doesn't mean that December will not deliver. Below I have picked out my personal top five fights for the month of December and I am sure that these will finish the year with a bang.

Dec 6th - Bamma 17 - Andy Craven vs Greg Severs

This fight is my pick of the UK MMA scene for the month of December. A featherweight match up which goes down at BAMMA 17 between two undefeated fighters and somebodies "0" has to go. This has everything on paper to say that it will deliver. Between both men they have fought nine times and only once have any of those fights gone to a decision and I don't think we will go the full 15 minutes on Saturday night.

Andy Craven comes in to the fight having won all of his fights by submission and three of his four fights have come by heel hook. A very dangerous fighter and will pounce on any little mistake that Severs makes. As for Severs, he also has three submission wins but two of these are from people tapping to strikes so in reality could have three TKO victories on his record.

Although this fight is in the middle of the fight card I know a lot of fans are really looking forward to this match up and I am definitely one of those.

Dec 6th - UFC 181 - Johny Hendricks vs Robbie Lawler II

This fight was a no brainer, following a fight of the year contender which took place back in March. That fight has to go down as the best UFC welterweight title fight in the last few years and proved to the world that the welterweight division can still deliver without GSP. Both men gave everything they had to try and take home the gold that night and going in to the fifth round it was even and whoever took that round would win the belt. I expect it to be just as close this time around.

Since that fight Lawler has been on a tear dominating both Jake Ellenberger and then Matt Brown to set him up as the clear number one contender in the division and get another shot at Johny Hendricks who has been on the sidelines recovering the first battle earlier this year.

If this fight is half as good as the first then we will be in for a treat.

Dec 12th - TUF 20 Finale - KJ Noons vs Daron Cruickshank

In my opinion Daron Cruickshank is one of the most exciting fighters to watch in MMA. Cruickshank is a second degree black belt in Taekwondo and he is not afraid to showcase his skills in the Octagon with three of his last five wins coming by way of TKO. All of these were then either by way of a head kick TKO or if the kick didn't finish the fight it certainly was the beginning of the end.

KJ Noons comes in to this fight having won his last two fights after going on a 0-3 run to end his career in Strikeforce and his UFC debut against Cowboy Cerrone. After picking up a unanimous decision victory over George Sotiropoulos to end the worst run in Noons MMA career. He followed it up with his best performance in the past four years by knocking out Sam Stout in 30 seconds and will now be hoping to carry on that form in this fight.

They say styles make fights and what's not to like as a former pro boxer and kickboxer with a Kenpo Karate black belt comes up against a second degree black belt in Taekwondo. These two men could take the lime light away from the women at the TUF 20 Finale.

Dec 13th - UFC on Fox: Dos Santos vs Miocic - Claudia Gadelha vs Joanna Jedrzejczyk

Even though this is a month full of women's fights and a second female UFC champion will be crowned my pick of the fights (that have been announced so far) is without doubt this match up. Like the fight I mentioned earlier between Craven and Severs both of these women are undefeated as professionals.

I first knew about Joanna Jedrzejczyk when she dominated Rosi Sexton at Cage Warriors 69 back in June and at that point I knew she could be a star of the future. After that fight it didn't take long for the UFC to sign her up and she made her UFC debut in July. At 7-0 and fighting in MMA for the past two years as a pro Jedrzejczyk always looks to finish fights but this fight will be the toughest in her career.

Claudia Gadelha is 12-0 and is still only 25 even though she has been a professional since 2008. Gadelha has six wins by submission including five wins by armbar and like Jedrzejczyk picked up a unanimous decision victory in her UFC debut in July.

I don't see how this fight will be be anything other than a really fun fight.

Dec 13th - UFC on Fox: Dos Santos vs Miocic - Rafael Dos Anjos vs Nate Diaz

The return of Nate Diaz, Diaz returns to action following his demolition of Gray Maynard a year ago and will return to face Dos Anjos on December 13th. Everyone by now I am sure knows that Diaz has not fought in 12 months because he wanted a new improved from the UFC but has now decided to get back to doing what he does best.

A win over Rafael Dos Anjos, at this point in his career could be the biggest win in the career of Nate Diaz. Dos Anjos is coming in to this having knocked out Benson Henderson in less than three minutes last time out and will be wanting to push on to get in to the title picture in a stacked division. I believe the fact Dos Anjos is now at the height of his career while Diaz will want to remind the fans what he brings to the division (while making as much money as he can) could make this a very entertaining match up.
