UFC 178 regains fan attention with the announcement of Alvarez vs Cerrone
by Andreas Georgiou - @AGeorgiouMMAAfter the earlier announcement that Bellator had come to terms with the release of Eddie Alvarez, it has been announced that he has jumped ship to the UFC.
Alvarez (25-3) will fight Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone (24-6-1NC) in the co-main event of UFC 178 in Las Vegas on September 27. Bobby Green; Cerrone’s original opponent, will face an opponent to be determined on a later card.
UFC faithful have been hoping for this fight ever since the rumours of Eddie Alvarez leaving Bellator MMA kicked off last month. At first it didn't seem like the fight would happen with Eddie's ongoing legal troubles with Bellator, but with his recent release UFC have swooped in to book the fight.
Alvarez is coming off a split decision win over Michael Chandler at Bellator 106 and will be his first fight since November 2013 after Alvarez injured himself in the wake of their rubber match at Bellator 120.
Meanwhile, Cerrone is riding a four fight winning streak, with his most recent victory coming in July against Jim Miller; a fight Cerrone finished with a vicious head kick and punches.
This will be a relief for UFC fans who have seen big changes to the September 27 event in recent months. After Jon Jones' original opponent Alexander Gustafsson was injured, it seemed that Bones would face replacement Daniel Cormier.
After a plethora of media stunts, the fans were hyped, but a training injury to Jones, which required surgery saw the fight postponed until UFC 182 on January 3rd in Las Vegas.
